Julian Ong
Dr Julian Ong is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Julian Ong Endoscopy & Surgery (Pte Ltd). His areas of interest are in endoscopy and in minimally invasive surgery, particularly in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. Dr Julian Ong also focuses on the management of all other colorectal conditions and surgery for perianal conditions. He has performed many colon and rectal surgeries in both laparoscopic and open techniques. He is an accredited console surgeon in robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. In addition, Dr Julian Ong also has an interest in the field of trauma surgery, being an accredited instructor in the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training program.
After graduating with a medical degree from the National University of Singapore, Dr Julian Ong fulfilled his years of residency and proceeded to complete his fellowships in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Aside from his passion for medicine and surgery, Dr Julian Ong is an all-rounded individual with keen interests in motorsports and sports. He has been actively involved in the Singapore SingTel Formula One Grand Prix since its induction in 2008, and is presently the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the event.

With the appointment of Zoe Cruz, I did some research on the entirety of Ripple's board members and compiled in list form their employment history, accolades/awards, and other board relationships. I know most of this info is on Rippple's Board site, but having it in list form is sometimes easier for me to read and process.
I put this together for my own research, hoping this will be helpful to others. Seeing the many accomplishments and powerful connections Ripple's board has made me even more confident of my investment in XRP. To me, XRP is an investment in people, not just a currency or a technology. If I can trust the people running the show, it gives me more faith in XRP's future.
Most interesting person to research was Susan Athey. She is also on the Board at Expedia.com, who owns HomeAway, an AirBNB competitor. I know people have been guessing what those two household names are, and I've seen AirBNB including in the discussion. If people are speculating that AirBNB is one of the names, I think it makes sense that a competitor like HomeAway/Expedia should be considered as well. But this is just pure speculation.

Yes, but the slow down is not 100% due to the trade war, it is due to a bubble, that the Trade War helped pop.
Why?

In particular, the ongoing trade war and disputes over data security and intellectual property have slashed profits, scared off investors, and created new operational risks for Chinese tech firms.

What was the real impact?

Many new economy firms are particularly vulnerable to falling U.S. sales — for Chinese companies on the MSCI stock index, the information-technology sector derives a higher percentage of revenue from the United States than any other sector. Second, China’s retaliatory tariffs cause the new economy outsize pain. Sourcing many technology inputs from outside the U.S. is difficult — as telecommunications giant ZTE learned when a U.S. export ban forced it to shut down last year — so tech firms using U.S. components have seen costs skyrocket. Tariffs squeeze the incomes of all Chinese companies and consumers, which has triggered a cycle of falling domestic spending that slows the whole economy. By all indications, this broader downturn is severe. IMF forecasts that, this year, tariffs could slash China’s GDP growth by a staggering 1.6 percentage points

What’s the result?

A generation of Chinese tech workers is confronting a new reality as the industry endures its worst slump since the 2008 financial crisis. China’s broader economic slowdown and the trade war with the U.S. have ended the boom that birthed heavyweights including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. Startups in Greater China have raised $32.5 billion via venture capital deals so far in 2019, less than a third of last year’s $111.8 billion, data from research and consulting firm Preqin shows. Job postings in the internet and e-commerce sector dropped about 13% in the second quarter, according to recruitment platform Zhaopin.

It is not the same as the last slow down…

During the country’s last tech downturn in 2016, companies froze hiring and cut jobs, and many were told to rewrite valuations, reassess assets, and slash costs. This led risk-averse investors to pour money only into marquee companies, pushing up valuations for the country’s largest startups and ushering the rise of a few tech behemoths that took control of almost everything. This time even the hottest startups feel the pain.

Between 2014 and 2017, Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei doubled its revenue, and a whopping 34 Chinese tech startups topped $1 billion valuations. By one forecast, the new economy was on track to create over 1 million jobs annually. But today, the once-prolific sector has reversed course: startups and tech giants alike have been reeling the past year. WeChat owner Tencent saw net income fall by a third, and e-commerce giant JD.com, Inc. lost $700 million. Alibaba forecasts that, this year, its sales will drop over 20 percent. And across publicly listed technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) companies, last year’s earnings dropped 140 percent from 2017 — a larger plunge than any other Chinese sector.

Most importantly,l I have a friend in Shanghai, who is now trying to move to Canada. He is a highly skilled computer programmer, in his early 30s. He got laid off recently. He thinks it was because he was too expensive, and the company brought someone else in that was less experienced but cheaper, and he saw this coming, because several other people like him were also laid off, in an effort to cut costs. He has not been able to find another job and is very frustrated. Nothing like this has happened to him before.
That partially confirms this…

China’s 8 million annual college graduates, programming or tech-firm management jobs were coveted opportunities. The tech sector also represented a new beginning for displaced wage laborers –including 33 million former manufacturing workers who found new economy jobs as couriers, warehouse workers, or security guards since 2015. Today, tech firms can no longer absorb these workers at the same rate.

What’s the government response. Xi announced a lot of tax breaks and subsidies for the tech sector, but with anything “governmental” this takes time to implement, I would not expect any impact until Q1 of next year, if that. Also long term, the “Made in China 2025”, Chinese tech independence movement…but that will take time…a lot longer than 5 years. China can’t make high end chips, and that level of precision engineering and production takes time to build up - I’m guessing - a decade.
The tech companies because of tariffs seem to be paying more to win customers than customers are willing to pay (or can now pay due to inflation) for their services. They can’t make up the difference with investor capital, so …. there you go…
My opinion is that small weak companies that were kept alive by easy to obtain capital before will get weeded out of the market. Large companies with networks that can create economies of scale will absorb some small companies with good potential, but at the same time those large companies will continue to restructure, become lean, cut back on perks, and lay people off until they become profitable in the current environment.
It’s going to be rough for a lot of tech workers in China for awhile…
